The Fran Zone / JMC Scholarship
For News Media that Makes a Difference
The scholarship application period is now open. Deadline to apply is March 3, 2017.
The Purpose
The Fran Zone/JMC Scholarship for News Media that Makes a Difference provides financial assistance to women pursuing a degree in the news communications field. It was created to inspire and champion media careers that focus on the role of news reporting, delivery, and storytelling in a democracy. Fran Zone created the Fund to encourage media reporting, information campaigns, and storytelling following a successful public information campaign on sexual harassment she led, partnering with iconic magazine editor and former President of Hearst Magazines Enterprises, John Mack Carter (JMC).
The Scholarship
The Fran Zone/JMC Fund will make available five (5) $1000 scholarships. The recipients will be announced in May of 2017. Scholarship winners will be invited to attend the Genii Awards on May 25th, which honors top media and entertainment industry professionals.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Selection Criteria
Judges will consider each applicant’s depth of thought, clarity of expression and commitment to media as a primary future career. Academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and community involvement will be considered, as will work or internship experience in a media-related field. A letter of recommendation from a college professor, counselor, and/or industry professional is a plus.

The Deadline
The application must be submitted online by 11:59pm on March 3, 2017 that same deadline.
Notification
The Scholarship Committee will review the applications and select the winners. Winners will be contacted in May.

- A student attending a Southern California (Ventura, Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties) college as a senior or graduate student.
- Female
- Demonstrated career commitment, leadership skills, strategic thinking and understanding of how media can inform and effect positive change on social issues.
- Enrolled in media courses, journalism courses or related curriculum.
- Enrolled in at least 6 semester units for Spring 2017.
